Apart from being a Professor of Intelligent Transport Systems at Newcastle University, Phil Blythe is the Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Transport. In this role he performs an independent challenge function to their department, ensuring that science and engineering evidence and advice is robust, relevant and high quality and that there are mechanisms in place to ensure that policy making is underpinned by science and engineering. Through the CSA network, he also ensures cross-government cooperation on science, engineering and technology issues. Phil is also Vice-President at the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
